We live today in a world that is changing in ways that challenge the “old order” of things out of which many of our churches were founded. As tempting and appealing as it is, American churches no longer have the luxury of supposing that they can live off the energy of a cherished “golden age.” Gauging congregational health primarily by membership, attendance, and budget is misleading and even dangerous in the long run. Regardless of size, location, social status, or economic stability, congregations today are faced with seeking God in the midst of any and all transitions.
The Presbytery of Coastal Carolina has entered into a second phase of Missional Transformation Coaching. It is called, “The Vibrant Congregations Initiative.” This initiative is based on the conviction that a congregation most fully expresses its faith and divine calling as it responds proactively to change in the world around it. Vibrancy is measured, not by numbers or a particular formula, but by a Spirit-led resiliency. Such resiliency involves deep engagement with the Scriptures, countercultural commitment to building community, honest assessment of today’s world, openness to try new things, and a general capacity for learning.
Through The Vibrant Congregations Initiative, Coastal Carolina offers opportunities to help the churches who constitute this presbytery to live into three key elements of its 2015 vision (the “Provocative Proposal”)—awakening spiritual imagination, congregational vitality, and leadership development.
Pastors, CREs, elders, and congregations are encouraged to avail themselves of these opportunities.
